At the Request of the Dump trailer Manufacturers (these are the same hinges used by all the large Dump trailer builders) these hinges will have a 1/16" to 1/8" "gap" around the hinge bolt.

Apparently there have been a few "issues" with hinges that are "too Tight". One, the tighter the hinge, the more critical that the hinge be aligned PERFECT with multiple hinges. As most dump trailer doors swing at close to a 270 degree Arc, When multiple hinges are used, and the pins are not in perfect alignment, the door will tend to "bind up" as it is swung open.  This can pose a problem to the average welder in a "Production Welder" setting. Additionally, it seem as the Dump trailers "age" the doors and side walls get "flexed" and perhaps bent, and this binding problem becomes even more severe.

The second major Problem is Sand, Grit and Rust. With tighter Tolerances, the sand and gravel the hinges are constantly exposed to, the "grit" tends to work into the hinge, cause very difficult operation. Finally, we have seen with tight hinges, that are not religiously greased (this type of equipment is often neglected, parked for months at a time) they tend to freeze up when left un-used for periods of time exposed to the weather.

Based on all the above factors, and the intended use (Doors on a dump trailer) where multiple hinges are always used, we felt it better to open up the tolerances rather than make them tight. The looser fit is not a detriment to the dump trailer door operation in any way, and may eliminate many potential problems.
