Brake flanges (backing plates) are welded to the axle tube to provide a secure mounting surface for trailer brake assemblies. The 2.56" pilot hole centers the brake assembly and ensures proper alignment with the hub and drum.
When adding brakes to an idler axle or replacing damaged flanges, confirm axle rating, brake size (typically 12" x 2" for 5.2K–7K B-Type), bolt pattern, and pilot diameter before installation. Professional welding and proper alignment are critical for safe brake operation.
