ST225/75R15 Explained

ST identifies a tire designed for trailer service. The nominal section width is 225 mm, the sidewall height is 75 percent of that nominal width, the tire is radial construction, and the final 15 means it mounts on a 15-inch wheel.

Load Range E

Load Range E is a 10-ply-rated trailer tire classification. A current Kenda ST225/75R15 Load Range E specification is rated at 2,860 lb maximum load at 80 PSI, with an approximate 28.1-inch overall diameter and 8.4-inch section width.

Use the specifications molded into the sidewall of the actual tire as the governing values. Tire brand, construction and model can affect exact load, dimensional and speed-rating specifications.

6 on 5.5 Bolt Pattern

This wheel uses six lug holes located on a 5.5-inch bolt circle. Both the number of lugs and bolt-circle diameter must match the trailer hub exactly.

Do not assume that every 6-lug trailer wheel is interchangeable. Pilot diameter, wheel offset, stud diameter and lug-seat configuration must also be compatible.

Black Mod Wheel

“Black Mod” refers to the common modular steel trailer-wheel design with circular ventilation openings around the wheel center. It is frequently used on utility, enclosed, equipment and cargo trailers.

Wheel Size Verification

The comparable current Dexstar MOD specification for a 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern is a 15x6 JJ wheel with a 4.27-inch pilot, zero offset and a 2,860-lb wheel rating.

Dexstar's current MOD specification does not list a 15x5 wheel with a 6 on 5.5 pattern. Their 15x5 MOD wheels are shown in 5-lug configurations. For that reason, this assembly should be physically checked for wheel stamping before relying on an older 15x5 inventory description.

Zero Offset

A zero-offset wheel places the hub mounting surface on the wheel centerline. Offset affects the position of the tire relative to the hub, suspension, trailer frame and fender, so replacement-wheel offset should match the original application.

Capacity Is Limited by the Lowest-Rated Component

A tire or wheel rating does not establish the trailer's axle or gross carrying capacity. The usable capacity of the assembly is limited by the lowest-rated component, including the tire, wheel, valve stem, hub, bearings, axle, suspension and trailer structure.

If both the actual tire and actual wheel are rated at 2,860 lb, the mounted assembly is effectively limited to 2,860 lb. If either component carries a lower rating, the lower rating governs.

Inflation

Many ST225/75R15 Load Range E trailer tires require up to 80 PSI to achieve their published maximum load capacity. The installed valve stem must also be rated for the inflation pressure being used.
