Overview
Demco 05408 is a replacement breakaway cable assembly used on compatible trailer brake safety applications. This cable is intended to replace a matching worn, damaged, missing, or incorrect breakaway cable where the existing part number, cable length, cable diameter, and hook style line up with the trailer system.
R&P Service Insight
Breakaway cables are small parts, but they are safety-critical. A cable that is frayed, kinked, too short, too long, routed poorly, or attached to the wrong point can prevent the brake safety system from working as intended.
-
Match the Existing Cable: Confirm part number, hook style, cable diameter, and length before ordering.
-
Check the Attachment Point: The cable must be connected to the proper tow vehicle or actuator attachment point for the system being used.
-
Inspect Before Every Trip: Replace cables that show fraying, broken strands, corrosion, damaged hooks, or stretched/kinked sections.
R&P Knowledge Hub
Compatibility: Best matched by Demco part number 05408, existing cable style, cable diameter, length, and trailer brake system design.
Vehicle / System Fit: Trailer brake safety applications where a matching Demco-style breakaway cable assembly is required.
Installation Notes: Route the cable so it can pull freely without binding, dragging, wrapping around safety chains, or contacting moving parts.
Performance Insight: A properly matched breakaway cable helps the trailer brake safety system activate during a separation event when the cable is pulled under tension.
Brand & Fitment Note
Selling Brand: Demco
Application Reference: Demco actuator or trailer brake safety references are compatibility references only. Always verify the part number and cable configuration before ordering.
What This Means: This listing is for one Demco 05408 breakaway cable assembly, not a complete breakaway switch, battery, wiring, or actuator kit.
Before Ordering: Verify cable length, cable diameter, hook style, attachment style, brake system type, and included components before installation.
R&P Repair Insight
When replacing a breakaway cable, do not assume all trailer safety cables are the same. Length, end style, routing, and brake system design matter. Replace the cable with the trailer parked safely, wheels secured, and the brake system inspected for proper operation after installation.
-
Length Check: Compare the replacement cable to the existing cable and confirm the proper routing path.
-
End-Style Check: Confirm the hook, loop, lever, or switch connection style matches the trailer’s brake safety system.
-
System Check: After installation, confirm the breakaway switch or actuator mechanism moves freely and the brake system functions correctly.
