System Function: A breakaway system applies full trailer braking if the trailer disconnects. The cable pulls a pin from the switch, activating the battery and sending power directly to the brakes.
Legal Requirement: Required on trailers with electric brakes (most states, DOT compliance). Without a functioning system, trailers are not road legal.
Battery Role: The onboard battery supplies emergency braking power independent of the tow vehicle. The charger maintains battery readiness during normal towing.
Critical Behavior: This is an emergency-only system. Leaving the pin pulled will keep brakes engaged and can overheat wiring and destroy the switch.

How the System Works
Critical Safety Note
The breakaway system is designed for emergency activation only.
If the pin is pulled and left out, the brakes remain fully engaged. This creates continuous electrical load and heat buildup, which can melt the switch and damage wiring.
Best Practice: After testing, always confirm the pin is reinserted and brakes are released.
