12.25" x 5" Right Hand Electric Brake Assembly for 12K-15K Axles
High-capacity 12.25" x 5" forward self-adjusting electric trailer brake assembly designed for 12,000 lbs to 15,000 lbs axles. Important Note: Cross reference manufacturer includes, Dexter (023-443-00 / K23-443-00)
Overview
This BK-12KHDE-02 electric brake assembly is a heavy-duty, right-hand (passenger side) solution engineered for high-capacity trailer axles. Designed as a high-quality replacement for 12,000 lb to 15,000 lb applications, it features a forward self-adjusting mechanism that ensures consistent braking performance without the need for manual star-wheel adjustments during normal use.
R&P Service Insight
This unit is specifically for heavy-duty commercial and equipment trailers. The 7-bolt pattern is the industry standard for 12k+ capacity spindles.
- Adjustment: Forward Self-Adjusting (FSA) technology keeps shoes at optimal tension.
- Materials: Features semi-metallic brake pads for enhanced heat dissipation and durability.
- Finish: The steel backing plate is finished in black paint for corrosion resistance.
R&P Knowledge Hub
Compatibility: Interchanges with industry standards including Dexter 23-447 (K23-447-00).
System Fit: Fits heavy-duty trailers including dual-tandem flatbeds and equipment haulers with 7-bolt brake flanges.
Installation Notes: Verify your axle capacity and mounting bolt pattern (7-bolt) before purchase. Ensure this Right-Hand unit is installed on the passenger side.
Performance Insight: The 12.25" x 5" footprint provides the necessary friction surface area to manage 15,000 lb axle loads safely under heavy braking conditions.
Installation Instructions
1. Preparation & Removal
Support trailer on jack stands. Remove wheel and hub-drum. Cut the two magnet wires and remove the 7 bolts holding the old backing plate.
2. Mounting
Bolt the new assembly to the flange. Ensure the primary shoe (shorter lining) faces the front. Torque the 7 mounting bolts to 45–50 ft-lbs.
3. Wiring
Connect the two magnet wires to the trailer's power and ground. Polarity does not matter for electric magnets.
4. Reassembly
Slide the hub-drum back on and adjust bearings to manufacturer specifications before reinstalling the wheel.
Maintenance & Cleaning
- Burnishing: New brakes must be "seated." Perform 20–30 stops from 40 mph down to 20 mph, allowing the brakes to cool between applications.
- Cleaning: Use Brake Parts Cleaner only. Never use gasoline, WD-40, or oil-based solvents as they ruin friction material.
- Inspection: Check magnet face for uneven wear. Ensure the "star wheel" adjuster moves freely, even though it is self-adjusting.
